- **Event Description**: Wrexham Talks Research Presents Academi Heddwch Cyrmu and Professor Colin McInnesAbout this Event is Research Lead at Academi Heddwch Cymru, Wales’ national peace institute (and Emeritus Professor of International Politics at Aberystwyth University). He was previously Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Knowledge Exchange and Innovation at Aberystwyth University, where he also held the UNESCO Chair in HIV/AIDS and Health Security. He was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts. He was Chair of the UK National Commission for UNESCO and represented the UK at UNESCO’s Executive Board and its Social and Human Sciences Commission. His research focused on the politics of global health, for which he was the inaugural recipient of the Special Achievement Award at the Wales Social Research Awards. He has worked with a range of public sector and charitable bodies, including Public Health Wales and the World Health Organisation, and was Special Adviser to the House of Commons Defence Committee during the first Blair government.Academi Heddwch Cyrmu (AHC) is Wales’s national peace institute and the only national peace institute in the UK. It is an alliance of the 9 universities in Wales, the peace movement in Wales, and associated bodies. It is funded by but independent of the Welsh Government. AHC is chaired by the Rt. Revd. and Rt. Hon. Dr Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, and is based at the Temple of Peace and Health in Cardiff. Its role is to conduct high quality research and through this inform public understanding and debate on key issues relating to peace in Wales and beyond. It is part of the global network of peace institutes.‘Wales as a nation of peace’Peace appears to be in short supply. From the war in Ukraine to long-standing insurgencies such as that of Boko Haram in Nigeria, conflicts abound internationally. Peace however is about more than the absence of war. It is about societies living without fear, about creating social resilience while preserving individual rights, and about promoting social justice, fairness, respect and equality. But this broader understanding of peace also appears to be under threat. From the 6 January 2021 attack on the Capitol to the summer riots in the UK in 2024, tolerance within society appears to be diminishing and fear increasing. What can we in Wales do about this? In 2024, Academi Heddwch suggested that, by building on its culture, history and recent legislation, Wales could become a ‘nation of peace’. This would have a positive impact upon our society, upon how we govern ourselves, and provide Wales with a distinct identity on the international stage. This lecture will explore what it means to be a nation of peace, why Wales should become one, and how it can do so.Colin McInnes yw Arweinydd Ymchwil Academi Heddwch Cymru, sefydliad heddwch cenedlaethol Cymru (mae yn Athro Emeritws Gwleidyddiaeth Ryngwladol ym Mhrifysgol Aberystwyth). Yn flaenorol, roedd yn Ddirprwy Is-Ganghellor dros Ymchwil, Cyfnewid Gwybodaeth ac Arloesi ym Mhrifysgol Aberystwyth, lle bu hefyd yn dal Cadair UNESCO mewn HIV/AIDS a Diogelwch Iechyd. Cafodd ei ethol yn Gymrawd Academi'r Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol, yn Gymrawd Cymdeithas Ddysgedig Cymru ac yn Gymrawd Cymdeithas Frenhinol y Celfyddydau. Roedd yn Gadeirydd Comisiwn Cenedlaethol y DG ar gyfer UNESCO a chynrychiolodd y DG ar Fwrdd Gweithredol UNESCO a'i Gomisiwn Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol a Dynol. Canolbwyntiodd ei ymchwil ar wleidyddiaeth iechyd byd-eang, ac am hynny ef oedd derbynnydd cyntaf Gwobr Cyflawniad Arbennig yng Ngwobrau Ymchwil Gymdeithasol Cymru. Mae wedi gweithio gydag amrywiaeth o gyrff sector cyhoeddus ac elusennol, gan gynnwys Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru a Sefydliad Iechyd y Byd, ac roedd yn Gynghorydd Arbennig i Bwyllgor Amddiffyn Tŷ'r Cyffredin yn ystod llywodraeth gyntaf Blair.Sefydliad heddwch cenedlaethol Cymru yw Academi Heddwch Cymru (AHC). Y cyntaf o’i bath ymysg pedair gwlad y Deyrnas Gyfunol. Mae hi’n gynghrair o’r 9 prifysgol yng Nghymru, y mudiad heddwch yng Nghymru, a chyrff cysylltiedig. Ariannir AHC gan Lywodraeth Cymru, ond yn gweithio’n annibynnol ohoni. Cadeirir AHC gan Y Gwir Barchedig ac Anrhydeddus Ddr Rowan Williams, cyn Archesgob Caergaint, ac mae wedi'i lleoli yn y Deml Heddwch ac Iechyd yng Nghaerdydd. Ei rôl yw cynnal ymchwil o ansawdd uchel a thrwy hyn lywio dealltwriaeth a dadl y cyhoedd ar faterion allweddol sy'n ymwneud â heddwch yng Nghymru a thu hwnt. Mae'n rhan o rwydwaith byd-eang o sefydliadau heddwch.‘Cymru fel cenedl heddwch'Mae'n ymddangos bod heddwch yn brin. O'r rhyfel yn Wcráin i wrthryfeloedd hirhoedlog fel gwrthryfel Boko Haram yn Nigeria, mae gwrthdaro'n doreithiog yn rhyngwladol.Mae heddwch, er hynny, yn golygu mwy nag absenoldeb rhyfel a thrais. Mae’n golygu bod cymdeithasau’n byw heb ofn, mae’n golygu gwydnwch cymdeithasol wrth ddiogelu hawliau unigol. Mae hefyd yn golygu hyrwyddo cyfiawnder cymdeithasol, tegwch, parch a chydraddoldeb. Ond mae'n ymddangos bod y ddealltwriaeth ehangach hon o heddwch dan fygythiad hefyd. O ymosodiad 6 Ionawr 2021 ar Capitol yr UDA i derfysgoedd yr haf yn y DU yn 2024, mae'n ymddangos bod goddefgarwch o fewn cymdeithas yn lleihau a bod ofn yn cynyddu.Beth allwn ni yng Nghymru ei wneud am hyn? Yn 2024, awgrymodd Academi Heddwch, drwy adeiladu ar ei diwylliant, ei hanes a'i deddfwriaeth ddiweddar, y gallai Cymru ddod yn 'genedl heddwch'. Byddai hyn yn cael effaith gadarnhaol ar ein cymdeithas, ar sut rydym yn llywodraethu ein hunain, ac yn rhoi hunaniaeth unigryw i Gymru ar y llwyfan rhyngwladol.Bydd y ddarlith hon yn archwilio beth mae'n ei olygu i fod yn genedl heddwch, pam y dylai Cymru ddod yn un, a sut y gall wneud hynny.
